What is GMDSS and why do we need it?

WHAT IS GMDSS?

As per the SOLAS Convention (Chapter IV), all passenger and cargo ships of 300 gross tonnage and upwards must carry GMDSS equipment. GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) is an international system that uses terrestrial and satellite technology and shipboard radio systems to allow rapid response in an emergency situation. The main purpose of the system is to immediately alert search and rescue authorities (SAR) and ships in the vicinity in the event of an emergency.

WHAT EQUIPMENT DOES GMDSS INCLUDE?

GMDSS equipment includes:

• radio installations (VHF, MF/HF)
• satellite communication equipment (Inmarsat system)
• Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB)
• Search and Rescue Transponder (SART)
• NAVTEX receiver
• Digital Selective Calling (DSC)
• Survival craft portable two-way VHF radios

GMDSS SEA AREAS

The specific set of equipment required depends on the Sea Area in which the ship operates:

• Sea Area A1 – within range of VHF coast stations (approx. 20–30 nm)
• Sea Area A2 – beyond A1, but within range of MF coast stations
• Sea Area A3 – outside A1 & A2, but covered by Inmarsat satellites
• Sea Area A4 – polar regions not covered by Inmarsat, using HF communications

Ships must be able to maintain continuous radio watch on certain distress and safety frequencies (e.g., VHF Channel 70 for DSC).

WHY IS GMDSS IMPORTANT?

GMDSS helps detect emergencies faster and improves coordination of rescue operations. If your ship is in grave and imminent danger, the GMDSS system allows you to send a distress alert with your exact position, ensuring that rescue services and nearby vessels are notified immediately.
