Situational Awareness

Situational awareness in maritime operations is the ability of the crew to accurately recognize and assess the ship’s surroundings, understand the meaning of current conditions, and predict how the situation may change. It is a critical skill for safe navigation, cargo handling, mooring, and emergency response.

Loss of situational awareness is a major contributing factor in many maritime incidents, including collisions, groundings, and accidents during deck or engine room operations.

➔ Maintaining situational awareness requires:

✓ Continuous monitoring of navigational instruments (radar, AIS, ECDIS), weather reports, and engine parameters.

✓ Regular visual scanning of the bridge horizon, deck areas, and work sites.

✓ Effective communication between team members and with other vessels or shore authorities.

✓ Hazard identification — detecting changes in traffic density, weather conditions, or equipment performance.

✔️Anticipation — evaluating what could happen next and preparing preventive actions.
