Ship manning isn’t just about having people on board — it’s about having the right people, with the right skills, in the right numbers!
Every vessel must be safely and efficiently operated by a qualified crew in accordance with the IMO Principles of Minimum Safe Manning and the MLC Convention. The size and composition of a ship’s crew depend on many operational factors — type of vessel, trade area, equipment, automation level, and voyage duration.
The goal is to ensure that the crew can:
✓ perform all operational and emergency duties,
✓ maintain safe navigation and machinery operations,
✓ comply with the hours of work and rest requirements, and
✓ prevent fatigue.
❗️Fatigue management is a crucial part of ship manning — even a well-trained crew cannot work safely if they are overworked or lack rest.
Responsibilities:
➔ Shipowner / Ship manager must provide safe manning and develop a fatigue management plan.
➔ Master must ensure the vessel is operated within safe manning limits and that crew rest hours are observed.
➔ Seafarers must monitor their own condition, report fatigue risks, and follow rest-hour rules.
In some operations, ships require additional crew — for mooring, cargo handling, training, or technical support. These are called supernumeraries and are often essential for safety and efficiency.
