SCBA vs EEBD

1. A Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus, or SCBA for short, is a full breathing apparatus with a compressed air cylinder, face mask, and regulator. It is designed for:

  • firefighting operations
  • rescue missions
  • enclosed space entry
  • working in smoke-filled or toxic environments

In short, an SCBA allows you to enter a hazardous space and operate inside it. Fire team must wear SCBA before entering a smoke-filled compartment. Typical duration is 30–45 minutes, depending on air consumption and cylinder capacity. SCBA must be used by trained personnel only — usually the ship’s fire team.

‼️ Under SOLAS Chapter II-2 and the FSS Code, cargo ships must carry:

  • At least two fireman’s outfits
  • Each outfit must include a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
  • Each SCBA must have a minimum air capacity of 1,200 litres
  • Spare charges or additional cylinders must be available

The equipment must be properly maintained, regularly inspected, and tested during drills.

2. An Emergency Escape Breathing Device (EEBD) is a compact emergency device, usually consisting of a hood and a small compressed air cylinder. Its purpose is strictly limited:

  • Escape.

It is designed to allow a person to leave a dangerous area safely. Typical duration is 10–15 minutes.

‼️ According to SOLAS Chapter II-2 / Regulation 13 and the FSS Code:

  • EEBDs must be provided in accommodation spaces
  • Additional EEBDs must be located in machinery spaces
  • They must be clearly marked and easily accessible
  • They must not be used for firefighting

VOCABULARY:

  • Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) — автономный дыхательный аппарат
  • compressed air cylinder — баллон со сжатым воздухом
  • firefighting operations — операции по тушению пожара
  • rescue missions — спасательные операции
  • enclosed space entry — вход в замкнутое помещение
  • working in smoke-filled / toxic environment — работа в задымлённой / токсичной среде
  • enter a hazardous space — входить в опасное помещение
  • duration — продолжительность
  • air consumption — расход воздуха
  • cylinder capacity — ёмкость баллона
  • fireman’s outfit — комплект снаряжения пожарного
  • spare charges — запасные баллоны (заряды)
  • Emergency Escape Breathing Device (EEBD) — аварийное дыхательное устройство для эвакуации
  • leave a dangerous area safely — безопасно покинуть опасную зону
