1. A Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus, or SCBA for short, is a full breathing apparatus with a compressed air cylinder, face mask, and regulator. It is designed for:
- firefighting operations
- rescue missions
- enclosed space entry
- working in smoke-filled or toxic environments
In short, an SCBA allows you to enter a hazardous space and operate inside it. Fire team must wear SCBA before entering a smoke-filled compartment. Typical duration is 30–45 minutes, depending on air consumption and cylinder capacity. SCBA must be used by trained personnel only — usually the ship’s fire team.
‼️ Under SOLAS Chapter II-2 and the FSS Code, cargo ships must carry:
- At least two fireman’s outfits
- Each outfit must include a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
- Each SCBA must have a minimum air capacity of 1,200 litres
- Spare charges or additional cylinders must be available
The equipment must be properly maintained, regularly inspected, and tested during drills.
2. An Emergency Escape Breathing Device (EEBD) is a compact emergency device, usually consisting of a hood and a small compressed air cylinder. Its purpose is strictly limited:
- Escape.
It is designed to allow a person to leave a dangerous area safely. Typical duration is 10–15 minutes.
‼️ According to SOLAS Chapter II-2 / Regulation 13 and the FSS Code:
- EEBDs must be provided in accommodation spaces
- Additional EEBDs must be located in machinery spaces
- They must be clearly marked and easily accessible
- They must not be used for firefighting
