Life-Saving Appliances (LSA)

Life-Saving Appliances (LSA) are equipment and devices used on ships to protect the crew and passengers in case of emergencies like man overboard, collision, or abandonment. Every crew member must be familiar with the types of life-saving appliances, their location and use.

Life-saving appliances are placed in easily accessible locations, clearly marked with the corresponding signs or symbols. The carriage of life-saving appliances is mandatory as per the SOLAS Convention (the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea), Chapter III.

The number, capacity and type of life-saving appliances differ from ship to ship depending on the vessel’s size, type, purpose, and the number of people on board. The LSA Code provides minimum requirements to comply with, in order to make the ship safe for its passengers and crew. All LSA must be approved, which means that they meet the international safety standards.
