Fall Preventer Device (FPD)

A Fall Preventer Device (FPD) is a safety component used during lifeboat launching operations to prevent accidental release of the boat from the on-load release gear.

The primary function of an FPD is to provide an independent secondary securing system between the lifeboat and its falls (suspension ropes or wires). This ensures that if the main release mechanism fails or is accidentally activated, the lifeboat remains securely attached until it is intentionally disconnected.

FPDs are typically installed before lowering the lifeboat into the water during drills, inspections, or maintenance. They are removed only when the boat is waterborne and ready for release. FPDs can be synthetic strops, wire slings, or other load-tested securing arrangements fitted with suitable shackles or hooks.

Guidelines for the fitting and use of FPDs are described in IMO MSC.1/Circ.1327, which recommends that:

✓ FPDs must have adequate strength and load testing certification.

✓ The design must avoid entanglement and allow quick release under load.

✓ Crew members must be trained in their proper use and inspection.
