PPE: Risks & Protection

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is designed to protect specific parts of the body from identified hazards and to reduce the risk of injury during routine onboard operations.

A hard hat (safety helmet) is worn to protect the head from falling or moving objects and impact injuries. It is especially important during cargo operations, maintenance work, and when working under suspended loads.

Safety boots protect the feet from crush injuries, sharp objects, and slipping on wet or oily surfaces. They are essential during deck operations, cargo handling, and maintenance work on board.

Dust masks are used to protect the respiratory system from dust and non-toxic airborne particles. They are commonly worn during cleaning, grinding, or working in dusty environments. However, dust masks do not provide protection against gases or chemical vapours.

A respirator offers a higher level of respiratory protection. Depending on the type of filters or cartridges used, respirators protect against hazardous fumes, gases, and vapours. They are essential when working with chemicals, or paints.

A face shield (visor) is designed to protect the face from splashes, sparks, flying particles, and debris. Face shields are often used in combination with safety goggles and helmets to provide full facial protection during high-risk tasks.

Coveralls protect the body and personal clothing from contamination, dirt, oil, chemicals, and minor mechanical hazards. On board ships, coveralls are considered an essential part of everyday PPE.

A safety harness is used when working aloft or outboard. It prevents falls and reduces the risk of serious injury by securing the wearer to a fixed point.

Proper selection, correct use, and regular inspection of PPE are essential. PPE does not eliminate hazards completely, but it significantly reduces the severity of injuries and helps protect life and health on board.
