Preferred Channel Marks are modified Lateral Marks used when a channel divides into two or more branches. They show the mariner which side is the preferred (main) channel.
➔ Where they are used
✓ At junctions or bifurcations of channels.
✓ In areas where one branch is deeper, safer, or more frequently used than the other.
✓ To guide vessels into the main fairway while still marking the alternative route.
➔ How they look
They follow the Lateral System identity (port or starboard), depending on the region (A or B). The buoy is painted in the basic colour (red or green) with a broad contrasting horizontal band. The colour of the band indicates the preferred channel.
Region A:
Red buoy with a green horizontal band ➔ preferred channel to starboard.
Green buoy with a red horizontal band ➔ preferred channel to port.
Region B:
Red buoy with a green horizontal band ➔ preferred channel to port.
Green buoy with a red horizontal band ➔ preferred channel to starboard.
➔ Topmarks:
Port hand buoy → can (cylinder).
Starboard hand buoy → cone (point upwards).
➔ Light characteristics
Preferred Channel Marks exhibit a composite group flashing (2+1), in the color of the mark. This light pattern clearly distinguishes them from ordinary Lateral Marks.
➔ In summary: Preferred Channel Marks are essential aids to navigation at channel splits. They combine the identity of a normal Lateral Mark with a contrasting color band and a special light signal, helping mariners choose the main route safely.
