Port of Call vs Port of Destination: What’s the Difference?

In shipping, Port of Call and Port of Destination are not interchangeable.

A port of call is an intermediate port where a ship stops during its voyage. Reasons for calling at a port can include:

• loading or unloading part of the cargo,
• bunkering,
• crew change,
• inspections, or repairs.

After completing the operation, the vessel continues its voyage to the next port.

Example:

➞ The vessel will call at Las Palmas for bunkers before proceeding to Brazil.

The port of destination is the final port of the voyage, where:

• the ship completes its planned route, and
• the cargo is finally delivered.

Example:

➞  The port of destination for this cargo is Antwerp.

Key difference

✓ Port of call – a temporary stop on the way.

✓ Port of destination – the last stop, the final goal of the voyage.
